I’m Kerrie, a Colchester baby photographer and I understand that preparing for your baby’s photoshoot can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to photographing little ones. However, with a little bit of planning, you can make your Little Garden Studio photo session a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved. Here are 10 things to prepare ahead of your session:
Choose a neutral outfit for your baby:
When it comes to baby photography, less is often more. A simple, neutral outfit can help your baby’s natural beauty shine through in the photos. Avoid busy patterns or bright colours that can be distracting.
Plan coordinating outfits for parents and siblings:
It’s important to consider the outfits of parents and siblings as well. Coordinating outfits in complementary colours can create a cohesive look in your family photos. I always recommend white, beige, grey, light brown, light denim, pastels or burnt oranges, reds. Stay away from pattern.
Pack snacks and drinks:
Be sure to pack snacks and drinks if you have little ones. This will help keep everyone energised and in good spirits throughout the session. I also have drinks and snacks on hand too!
Bring sentimental toys or blankets:
If your child has a favourite toy or blanket, bring it along to the session. These items can help your child feel more comfortable and relaxed, which can result in more natural and genuine photos.
Feed your baby before the session:
If you’re planning a newborn photo shoot, be sure to feed your baby before you arrive at the studio. A well-fed baby is more likely to be calm and content during the session. Its likely they’ll want feeding again as soon as they arrive, but we can always hope!
Arrive on time:
Arriving on time is crucial for a successful photo session. Being punctual ensures that you have enough time for setup and preparation before the session begins, however I know how hard it is to leave the house with a newborn just let me know if you are running late.
Pack a Change of Clothes:
Especially key for Cake Smashes! Packing a change of clothes for the journey home is key to avoid a sticky baby. It can also be useful for you if its newborn shoot incase of any nappy related accidents during the shoot itself.
Be patient:
Patience is key when photographing babies and children. Sometimes, it takes a little bit of time for children to warm up to the camera, or to get newborns to sleep so be patient and let the photographer work their magic.
Relax and have fun:
Remember, the goal of the session is to capture some beautiful and meaningful photos of your family. So, relax and have fun! Let your natural personalities shine through, and the photos will reflect that.
Trust your photographer:
Finally, it’s important to trust me as your photographer. I may suggest some poses/prompts that make you feel weird, but I promise the final result will work! I have the experience and expertise to capture some truly amazing photos, so trust my vision and let me work my magic.
